On April 7, the new exhibition “Sophie. Power. Literature” will be officially opened at the Goethe and Schiller Archive. Admission is free.

The Weimar Grand Duchess Sophie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach became the sole heir to Goethe’s handwritten works in 1885. She wanted to have a functional and dignified building constructed for the safekeeping of the manuscripts: the Goethe and Schiller Archive. Sophie was not only the owner and administrator of the estate, but also a cultural politician. She pursued the goal of making Goethe’s writings accessible to the public. The exhibition “Sophie. Power. Literature” takes a critical look at Sophie’s achievements and explores the links between literature and politics.
