Goethe’s 276th birthday
On 28 August 2025, Weimar celebrates Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s 276th birthday with a varied program around the Goethe National Museum and the Frauenplan. The celebration starts at 12 pm with a ceremonial welcome and the traditional cutting of the potato cake. At 1 pm, you can look forward to an innovative electronic concert reading based on Goethe’s “Urfaust” with the Kulturtechnikern: Faustus’ Loops & Words.
From 3 pm, you can test your knowledge in the Goethe quiz, while fascinating 3D experiences will be offered in the Goethe National Museum from 3 pm to 8 pm. From 4 pm, Goethe’s garden will be transformed into a relaxed oasis with lounge music by Marko Schlöffel and catering into the evening. There will be literary entertainment with the reading “Here is Goethe 275!” in the Goethe National Museum’s ballroom.
Musical and cultural highlights will be provided by the transcultural Risha Ensemble (from 5 pm) and an experimental live performance by Li-Chin Li (6:30 pm). The wine festival will open at 6 pm and there will be a festive congratulations to the birthday child, with Dr. Ulrike Lorenz among others. At the same time, the “Weimar Controversies” format at the Deutsches Nationaltheater invites you to discuss Goethe’s “Faust”.
Experience a day full of inspiration, music, literature and encounters – admission is free and everyone is welcome!
